Indian Institute of Arbitration & Mediation has been approved by the International Mediation Institute (IMI) at The Hague, Netherlands, as a “Qualifying Assessment Programme” (QAP) for IMI Certification for international mediators. IIAM is the only institution in India to attain the above status. This is based on programs whose mediator training and assessment assertedly provides assurance of mediation experience and expertise worthy of IMI certification. Accredited Mediators of IIAM will be eligible for empanelment with IMI. IMI is formed for the purpose of certifying international standards for mediators and for implementing the Global Mediator Competency Certification. On 1 January 2009, the International Mediation Institute (IMI) has launched its global mediator competency certification scheme. This is an online scheme for enabling businesses and their advisers to find the world's most competent mediators (including IIAM Mediators) by using an advanced search engine on the IMI web portal. IMI has also endorsed the IIAM Community Mediation Service and the Chairman of the Advisory Board of IMI is deputed as Member of the DPM Advisory Board of IIAM. Anil Xavier, President of IIAM has been inducted in the Independent Standards Commission of the International Mediation Institute. IMI is a non-profit foundation established in The Hague, The Netherlands as a public benefit initiative to generate confidence in and much enhanced understanding and usage of the mediation process among businesses and other disputants by encouraging high standards of training, by certifying high competency standards of mediators throughout the world, and by aiding users to find suitable competent mediators quickly and cost-free. It is created as an international public policy initiative following research and analysis by three leading non-profit dispute resolution bodies:

Netherlands Mediation Institute (NMI)
Singapore Mediation Centre/Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SMC/SIAC)
International Centre for Dispute Resolution/American Arbitration Association (ICDR/AAA)

The IMI Independent Standards Commission will determine the detailed standards, criteria and guidelines needed to establish high-levels of competency as a mediator.  The Commission comprises almost 30 international thought leaders in the dispute resolution field drawn from users, mediators, mediation provider institutions, educationalists and adjudicators.

Anil Xavier, President of IIAM and internationally accredited Negotiator and Mediator is elected as the Secretary General of Mediators’ Council of India (MeCI), the council of accredited Mediators, formed to represent the common interests of Mediation Providers, Mediators, Conciliators and Negotiators and to promote mediation, conciliation and negotiation in domestic and international arena. IIAM represented India for the 2005 Symposium on Advanced Issues on Dispute Resolution at USA, where representatives from across the Globe participated. Anil Xavier, President of IIAM served as Theme Leader for the Symposium, titled "Intentional Conversations about the Globalization of ADR". The symposium was conducted on October 29 - 30, 2005 at St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. For more details.

IIAM has become the first International Associate Member of the Civil Mediation Council of the United Kingdom, the accrediting body for Mediation Providers, and was recently welcomed to membership by Lord Justice Sir Brian Neil. The Civil Mediation Council recognized IIAM role and work in India and the importance of mutual cooperation in the development of international mediation links.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah, Former Chief Justice of India and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Indian Institute of Arbitration & Mediation has been awarded with the second highest civilian award of the country "PADMAVIBHUSHAN" by the President of India on the 26th of January 2004.
